US Cat Shows

In the US, judging is conducted in a manner far different from that of other countries. The owner carries her cat to the judging ring and places her in a judging cage. Chairs are provided in each ring so that you may sit and watch your cat being judged.

Try to keep talking to a minimum because it can be distracting to a judge. Also, too many loud voices can upset a cat, who may already be frightened by being handled by a stranger with strange cats all around.

Some shows in the US will have between four and twelve judging rings at a time with each cat being judged separately by four to twelve judges. Each judge conducts her own show. The first judge takes the cat out of the cage, sets it on the judging table and examines it thoroughly.

The judge will check for muscle tome, obesity, muscle development, coat texture, sex of the cat if unaltered, eye shape, skull formation under the fur, ear set, boning in the legs, length of tail, shape of feet and soundness of the coat.

She then returns the cat to the judging cage and washes her hands and the judging table with a disinfectant. She records any comments or awards to be given in the judging book, and hangs the appropriate ribbon, if any, on the cat’s cage.

Each cat is similarly judged by other judges in the ring who, in turn, hang the appropriate ribbon, if any, on the cage. Each cat competes within its own sex and color class and then competes for Best of Breed.

Ultimately, each judge will select ten cats (unaltered, altered or kittens) for her top ten Best in show awards. The numbers for the cats so chosen are places on top of the judging cages and the owners place their cats in the appropriate cages.

The judge normally takes each cat out of cage and presents it to the audience, listing its attributes. She then returns it to the cage and hangs the corresponding ribbons on the cage, for example. This procedure is followed until the Best Cat is proudly displayed.

After your cat has been judged and, if successful, a ribbon hung on her cage, the ring clerk will let you know when to return her to her exhibition cage. Pay attention to the loud speakers as there is a chance that your cat will be called back for tie breakers or even for a final award.
