Are You Able To Train A Cat?
Posted Under: Uncategorized
Cats are notoriously independent and have a mind of their own. Are you able to train your cat and teach him new tricks?
Mant cat owners think that there cat is simply too moody and sullen to listen. Some owners feel their cats are un-trainable simply because they are arrogant. Pets frequently fail to obey their owners simply because they fail to understand what it is you want from them. So, if you have tried to train your cat, you may not be doing it right.
Good Cat:
Training your cat takes time and patience. It requires more of this than it does with a dog. A sure way to achieve results is to use positive reinforcement. Please do not scold your cat because your cat is more than likely to misbehave when you are not paying attention. Instead, praise and reward good behaviour. Your cat can learn. It is wise to first start when the pet is young, about eight to ten weeks old. Despite its age any pet can do well.
How to get started?
The first thing to start with is training your cat to come when called. Hold a cat’s treat and simply call his name. Start by making sure you cat is in a good mood. Try to make sure that there isn’t a great deal of noise. Distractions slow down the kitty or worse confuse him. Decide on a single command. The command should be short and easy to say. For example, here kitty or come kitty work extremely well. Now, get down on her level by sitting or kneeling on the floor. Give the direction. Your voice should be happy and excited. When your cat responds to you, reward him with praise and a treat. Try to ensure that you sufficiently praise your cat. Then, move away and do the same thing again. The goal is to use the same tone of voice and the same command. Work on it for no longer than ten minutes. If the cat is bored or frustrated, stop for the time. Try to do this two or three times a day for about a week. Once your kitty has mastered this command you can then move onto others.
Some things that your cat needs to learn for his own well being are necessary to teach any and all cats. For example, he needs to learn to accept a harness and leash in case you are required to travel with him. Your cat should learn to use a carry crate.
What about a harness and leash?:
To do this, you’ll want to start by putting the harness on him. Do not restrain your cat once it is place. Praise him for it. Reward your kitty with a treat for responding so well. Once he is accustomed to wearing it attach the leash and allow him to lead you throughout the area. Attempt to coax your cat into following you with treats and praise. Many cats will learn to heel on the leash. Yet, most will not. All should learn to not panic or to struggle, though when wearing a leash.
A Carry Crate:
When it comes to the crate, it can be done a little simpler. Cats enjoy warm safe places so ensure you put a comfortable blanket and maybe even a toy inside the crate. Give him praise when you place your cat inside. Try leaving your cat there for a few minutes. Make sure that you let him out within three to five minutes. Avoid offering your cat ptaise when he leaves the carry case as you do not want him to be under the impression that this is the good behaviour. Make sure you offer rewards whenever he goes in. Each time try leaving the cat in the crate a little longer. Your cat will eventually be trained well enough to keep him there.
These simple hints and tips may show you how useful it can be to give your cat a little discipline.
